Playing with Word Clouds
I've been experimenting with a word cloud generator called Tagxedo. Below is a word cloud I created using words from the kindergarten writing section of the common core standards. Taxedo makes inserting large images into your blog a snap. Knowing the size to choose takes some testing. It does require that you download software to your computer. I wanted to play with the images to see if the big ideas in the standards appeared more identifiable. What do you think?

What an interesting idea, to check on those standards and the wording at least. I like that I see writing and books prominently displayed, and others 'with guidance, and support, from adults'. It's what teaching is, it seems. But will people listen?
ReplyDeleteI just love wordle and taxedo. What a creative way to look at the standards. The essential skills jump right out at you. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love the blue background with the words. I just want to read that one instead of the other one. Maybe because my mind is now like the students I've had--topsy turvy and creative!!! My writing workshop did change me as a writer and teacher!
ReplyDeleteDuh. This is so obvious an idea that I can't believe I haven't done it. I am surely stealing it now. This is a fun way to spark conversation about the common core standards. I am impressed that "with guidance and support from adults" stands out because this is the essence of a classroom writing workshop! I love when standards align with and support best practices!
ReplyDeleteVery cool idea! You are so smart. This gives me ideas, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'm with C. Rush on this--you are a genius and I actually did the head smack thing thinking I should have thought of it. Can't wait to steal your idea!
ReplyDeleteI agree! Very cool and fun to steal...maybe a presentation starting this way would grab everyone's attention in my building and make us more excited about mapping and switching over to common core. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this resource. Your word clouds are great. THey really do put a different perspective on the Common Core standards.
ReplyDeleteI've been making a lot of photo collages lately - same kind of thing. I love how things pop up - bigger, centered, provocative. I like the green one better - probably because I don't have to twist myself to read the words.
