So This Is What Spring Is Like?

Last year's residents of the nest
in our pear tree out front.
This post was inspired by a poem by Michelle at Literacy Zone. Her poem made me think about how our mild winter has felt strange and that I kept anticipating we would get more snow and ice, but we never did. Winter never returned and now I can hear the robins chattering to each other this morning as I write. I wonder if a pair will take up residence in the perfectly good nest in the crook of the pear tree out front. Of course, they would have to spruce it up a bit. I've been so busy with the demands of school that I haven’t really surveyed the yard for winter damage yet. At this time of year where I live, the snow shovels, ice scrapers and down coats are still in use. On Easter, it is usually freezing, even snowy and little girls wear sweaters with their spring dresses at church. We dare not plant perennials until after Mother’s Day or they would freeze and die but I’m not sure that would happen this year. This year, we are actually having spring, at least I’m guessing that’s what it is. This weekend is predicted to be glorious; seventy-five, sun, and a light breeze. My husband is planning on putting the screens back up today. Unbelievable for Michigan in March.

  1. Winter? What winter? Here in Illinois it's been the same. This last week was beautiful! 80s in March? What does this mean for summer? I wonder. Our spring break is another week away. We joked at school that all this beautiful weather will disappear and we'll probably have one last snowfall over spring break!?! Hope not. Enjoy the warmer temps. Watch for those birds nesting. Be safe from the storms! (Thanks for the shout out too!) :)

  2. Diana, I live in Michigan too. Your description sounded so familiar. I love this weather! I'm hoping we continue this weather trend right into summer. However, I keep wondering if winter will return in some unexpected way. We'll see.

    1. I keep thinking the same thing Val. I keep thinking this is all a tease and we'll end up having a snowstorm.

  3. Well here's a negative to this crazy, wonderful snowless winter, I've been hit by Stinky bugs because they are confused about this weather. Just a few, but even with an exterminator they've been walking in my bedroom, living room...bed...ugh!

  5. I know I should be glorying in this warm weather, but it's actually making me a little crazy! What will the summer be like if it's 70 in March?

    1. Yeah, and I put shorts on yesterday for the first time in months. Oh my, it wasn't pretty. Usually I have another month or so before I need to even thinking about that.

  6. It's this strange in Colorado, too, Diana. The ski resorts in the mountains are crying 'foul' because they will lose so much spring break business. The snow there is not good. I still think we might really get it in April. We'll see!

  7. It's been just the same in Ohio! In fact, I can't really get used to the fact that it's actually halfway through March already, because I feel like we never got January or February. Like Linda, I keep wondering if we'll get a final snow dumped on us really late... of course, since it's going to be in the 70's all this week, maybe not!
