This is a picture of my thread drawer edited in befunky. |
I’ve been thinking a lot about thread lately. Maybe it is
because I feel like I have all kinds of loose pieces of my life laid out
waiting to be sewn together. I keep
thinking about my mother’s big sticky wall that she uses to arrange and
rearrange her quilt blocks prior to sewing them together. If my life were a
quilt pattern, I wonder what it would be. Crazy quilt, nine patch, or some kind
of star or pinwheel? I’m itchy to see some kind of recognizable design.
Yes - I'd like to live on a sticky wall - my mom has one of those too. Rearranging pieces so they complement each other and sometimes just plucking a piece off and discarding it!
ReplyDeletePicasa opened up its editing possiblities and I'm looking forward to messing around with photos too.
I was just thinking today how it is my bedroom that best reflects the state of my life. If I am all over the place doing 100 things my room is a complete mess- a disorganised thread drawer. When I feel more in control my room is tidy with all clothes and items in their correct spots- like an organised thread drawer.
ReplyDeleteThis week, my room looks somewhat like the image in your post :) Time to do something about it!
P.S How lucky you are to have a sewing Mum. Something I always wanted as a child visiting every other friend's house!
Good question. What would a life look like if we could lay out all the pieces and thread them together? I don't know about the pattern but I think we would see lots of colors.
ReplyDeleteI also thought this was a good question. I like the visual image of loose pieces waiting to be tied together. It seems like you have been keeping you OLW in mind often throughout the year so far.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting that you have continued to use your OLW to nudge you thinking and writing. You certainly chose well!
ReplyDeleteTHREAD is a great word. Your slice got me thinking about what my quilt would look like. Probably a lot of haphazardly stitching, but with bright colors and pieces waiting to be connected.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!

Diana,
ReplyDeleteYes, you have chosen a winning word and I love the metaphors you unfold. There's a saying...when life hands you scraps, make a quilt. I think I am probably a scrap quilt. Thanks for a thought-provoking post =. ~ Theresa
I love that consideration of thread and your childhood experience with a mom who created "crazy" quilts,
ReplyDeleteBonnie
Hmmm...I like the idea of everyone having a quilt design; how interesting life would be if that were the case! Neat question and I love the memory of your mom's sticky wall.
ReplyDeleteYour "thread" posts have taken me into a whole different world, as about the only sewing I do is to sew on buttons when they fall off! I'd love to hear a larger reflection on what kind of quilt your life would be -- maybe next week's slice? :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is a poem in prose. Your words are so poetic! I love the image. I am going to have to check out your photo editing tool.
ReplyDeleteBTW- do you watch Touch on Fox on Thursday nights? Every time I hear the opening about how we are all attached by threads, I think of you and your one little word.
I am going to have to check out that funky photo editor too! My mom quilts too. Love the metaphors you've stitched together.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting concept of the quilt. And it used to be that it was made up of pieces of your life and relative's lives - as in their bits and pieces of clothing scraps - joined together to make your quilt. I think I would like to see a quilt of my life. It would be a fun thing to construct if ever I found the time. But no fair throwing pieces away. Each piece is a part of your life. I think I am going to think about this, seriously. Thank you for this food for thought. I don't visit your site as often as I'd like because, though I am following, I cannot get your site to link no matter what I do!

I'm not sure what the quilts were called, but my Italian grandmother, like many immigrants, used all of the old, dark wool scraps from coats and such, to make a very practical and warm but not very pretty quilt. Maybe that is why I admire folks who make lemonade from their lemons.

Maybe it is because I feel like I have all kinds of loose pieces of my life laid out waiting to be sewn together.
ReplyDeleteLovely image. Your life like pieces of a quilt. Did you decide what kind of quilt you would be? Whatever you decide, I think you will be colorful and creative.
