Sisters

I'm nine years younger than Liz and seven years younger than Jennifer. Although I'm close to my sisters, we always seem to be at different stages. When I was in high school, they were getting married. When I was in college, they were having kids. By the time I got married, they were getting divorced. Now that my children are older, Liz and Jen are busy being grandparents. Center stage in our family, is typically reserved for whatever my sisters, their children, or grandchildren happen to be experiencing. I'm usually watching in the wings, unless they are having a fight and need someone to take their side. I'm okay with being the observer. It makes for far less theatre.

  1. I think a great book to write, would be one told from each sibling's point of view. I remember Erma Bombeck writing to each of her son's why he was their favorite. It sounds like you have all the research to turn this into a even longer piece!

  2. I love this piece! A quick way to paint the picture. The photo just adds to the flavor!

  3. Love the picture. It would be interesting to compare your memories of that picture with each of your sisters. Your writing has lots o voice. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Nice little vignette. Maybe it's more about personality. There are 3 sisters in a 5 year span in my family, I'm the oldest but I'm usually at the wings too. My sisters just have more weather going on in their lives.

  5. Ah, family. It's healing to write about this topic. I feel, too, that this could be a much larger piece for you. The picture goes so well with your story.

  6. Your picture fits your words. You crafted your text with a see saw type affect - what they are doing, what you are doing. Loved it. MHG

  7. I have two younger sisters and your slice made me wonder what the youngest would say about growing up with us.

  8. Telling your story of three sisters must be so interesting; each with a point of view. I like that you are writing to describe the family. I agree with the earlier comment that it would be fun to see your sisters' points of view, too.

  9. I loved this slice - and the photograph at the end really gave it a poignancy...something about the way you are off on your own a bit, gazing towards them as they look into the camera. Ah, sibling life!
