My Latest Excuse for Not Exercising: Writing


I have been thinking a lot about a post written by Mary from The View From My World comparing the rigors of the SOL challenge with starting an exercise program. I couldn’t agree more. It feels the same. Carving out the time to write and post daily adds to my to do list. It either adds to it or it has to take the place of something else. For me, daily writing means less sleep and less watching my husband watch TV. And interestingly, the TV thing bothers him greatly. But the rewards of daily writing have been huge, amazing, and so very worth it. Although, as Mary said, there are days when it doesn’t feel fun. I have also found that daily writing has become an excellent excuse not to exercise as much as I should. So does that mean that exercise, even though it is good for you, is even less fun than writing? Okay, so I’ll get on the treadmill after I’m done with my post, that is if I’m not too tired or my husband doesn't want me to watch him watch reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond.

  1. Would I really exercise if i didn't write or would I watch TV? I don't dare to answer. I like the once a week routines. Dancing on Mondays and slicing on Tuesdays. :)

  2. I find that carving out time for writing helps me become more intentional about the way I spend my time. Because I have a reason to save up my moments, I am wiser with them.

    I think there is another slice hiding inside this one--the relationship between your husband watching tv and your activities. This is a universal issue, I think!

  3. haha, I love the lines about "watching him watch tv" -- too funny! I'm with you -- this challenge is definitely (one of many) excuses for not exercising! And not doing the laundry. And, some days, not cooking dinner at home! :-)

The weather is getting spring like in CT and I think it would be really great to go for a run or a walk, but I am not fitting it in because I go straight to the computer to find out what has been posted on the Slice Challenge. It is just the beginning of the second week and I am working on my rhythm and I know I will find the time to fit in everything.

  6. Must be the day for thinking about exercising, I blogged about the same theme - only I had to exercise as I was in a challenge for just that. Good luck with the treadmill today! I have to leave a good book on mine otherwise the treadmill just becomes a dust collector!

  7. It's not slicing that prevents me from exercising--it coaching speech. Now that it's over I'll have time to write and walk and play! I laughed at the line about watching your husband watching TV--I often watch mine sleeping as he thinks he's watching TV!

  9. I too was laughing all through this post. I began exercising in February, was doing great, everyday...yeah, March hit and it is clear where my priorities lie...reading and writing. The strength training that my body really needs is going to have to wait cause right now I need this!

  10. Loved that you watch him watching TV! He really does like having you around, and the writing has gotten in the way. Mine is trying to be quiet and not talk to me when he sees me at the computer. He knows how much I hate being interrupted in mid-thought. They do need our time too, though.
