Twitter: Let's Do Lunch!

As I mentioned last week, it took me six months to compose my first tweet after opening my Twitter account. Good grief. I never considered Twitter as a way to connect and collaborate until Stacey's TWT post about trying out Pinterest and Twitter last November. Getting started with Pinterest felt easier although it took some trial and error. It has proved to be an excellent way to begin to connect with other speech therapists. With my transition back to speech this fall, I hoped that Twitter might also be a useful way to expand my hunt for other speech therapists like me. One problem is that I'm still so drawn to all the literacy tweets that I forget that I'm supposed to be looking for speech stuff. But I will keep at it. Like Pinterest and blogging, Twitter will take time and starting slow works fine with me. And right now, I am so excited when I see that someone I know from the TWT community posts a tweet. It feels like looking across a noisy crowded cafeteria on the first day of school and seeing a familiar face and being so relieved that I will have someone to eat lunch with. So if you are thinking about diving into Twitter but you are afraid of eating alone, don't worry. I'll look for you, if you'll look for me. Maybe we can eat lunch together. Seriously, if you are interested in Twitter, read Stacey's previously mentioned post and her recent post on microblogging. Also, check out the excellent LiveBinder below curated by Steven Anderson. It's filled with resources to help get you started with Twitter.

An Educators Guide To Twitter

  1. I just started with Twitter this summer and haven't tweeted much and am still getting the hang of it. I find all the social media stuff somewhat overwhelming, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linked In...
    Let's definitely do lunch. @MargaretGSimon

    1. I totally agree with you Margaret! I feel like such a dork but I keep trying. I am finally starting to figure out the hashtag thing.

  2. I love Twitter. It has become my best PD. I downloaded tweetdeck from Google CHrome and now follow more conversations then I thought possible.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion Deb! I will play with tweetdeck in Firefox. Chrome was running so slow for me it was driving me crazy.

  4. I just finally joined Twitter earlier this summer. I had resisted it so long thinking that it would be one more thing that would take up a lot of time on-line in a time when I am trying to have more balance and be more present at home. However, I am finding that I really enjoy it and it has not taken over too much time. One of the great advantages is that some educators that I really admire do not necessarily blog but they are on Twitter. I should have signed up sooner :)

    1. I felt the same way. I'm trying to figure out tweetdeck as Deb mentioned. I need a twitter tutor. :)

  5. I enlisted myself in Twitter a long time ago, but kind of leet it lapse into disuse. I couldn't find a reason, as with Facebook, to have everyone know what I was doing or thinking. But I think I'm going to have to rethink that thinking, as friends and acquaintances have become more active on it. Tweetdeck...I need to check that out. Here's to lunch with friends!

  6. I LOVE the cafeteria analogy! When you direct messaged me, it was just like "looking across a noisy crowded cafeteria... and seeing a familiar face"! Thank you! :-) I have been trying Tweetdeck too, and last night I used TweetChat to follow my first chat! (Which was really scary as I felt I didn't have much to contribute, and then when I wanted to say something, the conversation was moving too fast and they'd be on to something else before I got my thought posted!) It was kinda fun too though, and definitely a great way to learn.

  7. I will have to consider tweeting. My husband and daughter tweet. I like the idea of feeling more connected.

  8. I need a Twitter tutor, someone to sit beside me and explain. I am looking into resources, so I may join you one day.

  9. Diana,
You know if I happen to see you I'll save you a spot anytime-the literacy world still needs your thoughts and ideas! No talent wasted, ok?

  10. Twitter has been awesome. And I've learned that you can't read it all. You take it in little, bitty chunks -- because you can easily be sucked in. Let me know if you need any further help. I've got a seat here at the table for you! I agree with Amy - we still need you sitting at the literacy table! :)

  12. Hi Diana, I'm @LBaie, & if you'll share your id, I'll look for you. I haven't spent much time tweeting, but sometimes I will follow a thread to see what's going on. It just takes more time that I don't always have. Best wishes for the speech work this year. I will miss your literacy words which helped me a lot.
